Wine Storage Options

If you’re planning to start collecting wine or have purchased some quality wines that you want or need to age properly, then you should consider your home storage options or an off-site solution option.

Home Solutions
These can range from:

1. your cantina or cold cellar
2. your basement
3. some kind of racking system in a closet
4. a free-standing unit (of varying size)
5. a custom-built cellar

In my opinion, the last 2 options are your best choice—especially if you are planning to expand your collection (money permitting).

Off-site Solutions
I was only able to find 3 places in Toronto:

1. The Fine Wine Reserve Inc.
2. Iron Gate – Private Wine Management
3. The Wine Vault Toronto

Any option you choose, you need to ensure you’re getting optimum storage conditions, like:

an environment free from wild temperature fluctuations
a place with some humidity and air circulation
a place that is free from vibration
a place that is dark
a place free of odours

The temperature should ideally be between 13°C and 18°C. Plus if your wine has a cork—ensure the cork is always wet otherwise it will dry up and let oxygen in (you’re ok to stand the wine if it has a screw-cap).

Plus, like I mentioned above—money permitting. For most of us, budget is an issue.

Notes:
1. Consider obtaining a certified appraisal of your collection and build it into your insurance policy.
2. Your home fridge is not the place to store your wine. Normal refrigerators have constant vibration and cold will have a negative effect on the flavour. Plus, the evolution of your wine may be stunted because of the low temperature.
